WASHINGTON D.C.- GitMachines, which supports civic innovation by creating pre-configured tools that make it easier for developers to build technology compatible with government IT policies, will receive $500,000 as a winner of the Knight News Challenge on Open Gov.
The challenge, launched in February 2013 by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, accelerates projects with funding and advice from Knight’s network of innovators.
GitMachines addresses a challenge governments often face— they are largely reluctant to adopt new software and technology because of security and compliance concerns. Through GitMachines, developers can foster innovation by accessing a grab-and-go depot of open source, accreditation-ready servers that support their projects.
“When it comes to all the techie energy of civic hackers out there, there's a big gulf between how the private sector develops IT and government develops IT.” According to Greg Elin, one of GitMachines co-founders. “We felt lowering the burden of IT certification and accreditation could improve how civic innovators and government IT administrators interact.”
Unlike traditional servers that can take hours or days to set-up, GitMachines can be downloaded and up and running in minutes and are pre-configured to meet government guidelines. GitMachines “Trailhead” tool will provide step-by-step guides on securing software libraries to government specification. This makes it easier for government IT to adopt open source software, and will help government agencies adopt new technology more quickly in the future.About GitMachines
